Description: This cutting-edge video uses the lens of easy-to-understand basic neuroscience to take an in-depth look at how the brain is effected by the incredible power of forgiveness - of self and others, and why, contrary to both popular belief, and several religious tenets, forgiveness is not always the right thing to do nor in the best interest of the perpetrator or the victim. Powerful examples from diverse cultures are presented, along with modern and historical examples. Forgiveness is a lengthy process that includes several distinct hierarchical stages that begin with meta-awareness and apology. There are specific regions of the brain whose functions are involved in the motivation and process of forgiveness. In addition to apology, this video takes a look at the processes of repentance, redemption, and empathy. Forgiveness of self and others effects a wide-range of physical and psychological health, and has a direct connection to human immune system functioning and health, intellectual functioning, and the processes of the all-important executive functioning. Shame and guilt are often twinned with the concept of forgiveness, and these issues will be presented. But whether to forgive or not, including a template of how to do it when it is appropriate, will be presented at some length.
Upon completion of this video you will:
- be able to fully define the concept of forgiveness from a scientific as well as an experiential viewpoint
- understand the public, religious, legal, and community pressure to apologize for one's transgression, whether or not it is appropriate
- understand the downside of forgiveness
- know the areas of the brain that are effected by forgiveness of self and others
- know the process and steps of how to forgive when appropriate through a template
- understand the cultural determinants of forgiving
- understand the connection between forgiving and living a healthy life
- define the connections that exist between shame, guilt, and forgiving
- understand the philosophical, psychological, and legal ramifications of contrition
Presenter Info: Dr Ullman holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with academic and clinical expertise in behavioral neuroscience. She is a college and university professor, international presenter, author, researcher, and trained disaster emergency responder. Dr Ullman has been educating, researching, diagnosing and treating individuals, couples, groups, families, and first responders for trauma and addiction-based disorders for more than 30 years. Dr 'U' as most of her patients call her, has devoted both her research efforts and clinical work to the diagnoses and treatment specific to disorders of arousal dysregulation. This population includes children and adults that have experienced early childhood trauma such as sexual abuse, neglect, and/or violence. Unfortunately and through no fault of their own, a great many of these children, unable to self-regulate their emotions secondary to their abuse, develop issues in adulthood such as substance (drug and alcohol) and process (sex, food, self-harm, gambling) addictions, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), explosive uncontrollable anger, and personality distortions that may include Narcissistic (NPD) and Borderline (BPD) personality disorders. Dr Ullman neuropsychologically tests, renders diagnosis and treats children and adults with these issues in individual, group, couples, and family settings. Dr Ullman's research includes the first and only research-based neuroscientifically-validated and peer-reviewed neuropsychological test battery for what is clinically referred to as sexual addiction.
In addition to her private practice physically located on the 'mainline' area of suburban Philadelphia, the vast majority of Dr Ullman's patients and consults are with individuals and companies located throughout the world and are seen vial HIPAA-compliant telemental health web-therapy video.
